This post from David Lee King is interesting reading, but of course it applies just to public libraries. Or does it? Aside from the broader question of other RTOs competing with TAFE, what services do we in libraries offer that is better than elsewhere? There are our collections that are tailored to course content, which will surpass what’s available at the public library (and sometimes that of a university library). We are able to help people with low levels of digital literacy when they’re here (registering for moodle, for example). I think that we generally do our customer service very well, which I think is the most important thing that we get right.
Getting a new LMS makes this question even more interesting. Which parts of our jobs will be automated? Are there services that we can think about offering that we’ve not had the time (or technology) for? We have an interesting 6 months ahead of us!
